What inspired you to set up Wonderland, a crèche service for events and weddings?

At my son’s christening 10 years ago, I thought it would be lovely if the girls who worked in my nurseries could come and bring some toys and arts and crafts to entertain the children. After that was a success, we started doing the same at weddings and events for friends, family and through word of mouth.

How does it work?

I bought an amazing canvas bell tent and an indoor gazebo and we decorate them according to the theme or style of the event. We find out how many children we will have, what age they are, and what they like so we can personalise everything. We might take staff who are particularly good at baking, face-painting or organising group games. We’ve even sourced ponies with horns attached to their bridles when we needed unicorns! We work with the bride and groom so they are more relaxed, the hoteliers are happy and we can keep the children busy at important moments. We’ve even arranged hangover crèches for the morning after!

Why do you think it is such a success?

We’re not there as entertainers but as quality childcare providers. We know it is a privilege to be part of someone’s special day, and the parents are always appreciative. We use the same ratios as in the nursery, plus a supernumerary member of staff. We don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t maintain the same high standard of care as in our settings.
